Chained fields display wrong list

I have a set of 3 chained fields, tcf_product => tcf_module => tcf_component

Some products do not have modules and some modules do not have components, and I have TCF set up so that empty fields are hidden.

The default product has both modules and components, so all three fields are on show.

If I select a product that has a module without components, then the component field disappears as expected, however if I select a product without any modules, (from the default position showing all three) then the module field will disappear, but the component field will still show.

I can select an option from this orphaned component, but will get a 'Failed to parse result from the server'
