version number usage should be optional

Thanks for a great plugin. However, we have quite a lot of software components and corresponding versions at linadd.org and the required use of version numbers for the screen shots makes the ScreenSHotsPlugin virtually useless to us. Other than that, it's great! So we would really want to continue using it. Therefore we suggest that the version number usage becomes optional.

In the mean time, is there a workaround?

As I tried, it is allowed to append screenshot with no component or version selected but in combo boxes there are no items with <any> or <not specified> meaning so screanthot is then unaccesible. I'll add this behaviour... Any suggestions about that?

What I did as a workaround was to create a version "<any>" and then use that as the version for (all) the screenshots.

However, my point is that it would be nice if the version field in the screenshots pages could be hidden (optional) altogether, since the mere presence of that field (when not used other than to hold a simple string like "<any>") is confusing to the novice user.

You probably mean that this field shall be possible to disable in trac.ini configuration, right? Anyway, I'll append <any> field too since your's workaround produce additional tags which is not intended everytime.

Generally, whole system of selecting components and versions and displaying apropriate screenshots with its default behaviour is let's say bony, but I didn't invent any solution how to make it better. It needs an innovative idea :-).

If only those components/versions were shown for which there were screenshots that would make things much more useful, although the add operation would then need to be changed to allow for images to be added to empty components/versions.

The ability to specify a specific component/version in the trac.ini would also be useful though, to only show images in that component/version or to disable tagging of screenshots by component/version all together.

Even if this is not properly documented yet, layout of ScreenshotsPlugin changed completely which make this ticket obsolete and maybe even solved. If you are still in touch and not satisfied with current state of component/version usage, please, make a new ticket for this.
